M, known privately as Barbara Mawdsley is the head of MI6 in the continuity of the Raymond Benson James Bond novels.

Novel biography[]

Zero Minus Ten[]

In one of the only plot points that carried over from John Gardner's COLD, Sir Miles Messervy had retired from MI6, and Mawdsley took his place as M.

Doubleshot[]

Following the events of High Time to Kill, as well as Bond's various mental and physical issues following the incident, M determines that Bond is not in condition to carry out his assignments. Despite so, Bond continues his investigations to Union and the death of Helena Marksbury. Bond eventually discovers existence of two Union members Michael Clayton and Walter van Breeschooten, who are due to Tangier, but she still reprimands Bond for continuing investigations, which Bond is too weak and personally involved to carry out.

She turns out to be partly right, as Bond has been gamed by The Union this entire time. They murder Dr. Kimberly Feare and frame Bond, who had fainted again, for it.

After Bond has arrived in Tangier, M learns of Dr. Kimberly Feare's death, as well as Bond having taken a Walther P99 pistol without authority from Q branch. After Bond and Latif Reggab of the SIS section in Tangier fail to bring down the Union encampment near Chefchaouen and Ketama, the former is again framed for a terrorist attack in a ferry, where the Walther P99 Bond took being left on the scene of the attack.

M and Bill Tanner see camera footage of this incident, seeing Bond (actually Union operative Peredur Glyn, who has been turned into Bond's doppelgänger) involved in the attack and order Bond to be apprehended at once. Eventually CIA agents - twins Heidi and Hedy Taunt - find Bond, with him phoning to M and explaining what is going on. That there is a summit involving Gibraltar that's attended by Prime Ministers of UK and Spain - as well as Governor of Gibraltar - is target of Union's schemes.

M relents and authorizes Bond to continue his investigation, however he must be accompanied at all times by the Taunt sisters. Bond is ultimately successful, with Domingo Espada and co-conspirators killed at The Covent and the Union strategist Nadir Yassassin successfully apprehended.

Afterwards, M is then informed by neurologist James Molony that Bond's temporal lobe lesion was successfully operated on, and that Bond was provided bad medication by Molony's nurse, who was a Union spy.

Never Dream of Dying[]

M Sends Bond to track down stolen quantities of experimental explosives.
