Irvin Kershner, or "Kersh," was an American film director. Having been working since the 1950s, in 1980 Kersh directed the greatest sequel of all time; The Empire Strikes Back, the sequel to the smash hit Star Wars. Following his success on Empire, Kersh was hired to direct the non-EON James Bond film Never Say Never Again, starring Sean Connery, who Kersh had previously directed in A Fine Madness. He remains the only American to have directed a Bond film.
Irvin Kershner died of lung cancer in Los Angeles in 2010. He was 87 years old.
